âVery Well,â Mr. Crow answered. âThe dispute, then, is this: Jasper says
that in spite of your looking so wise, youâre really the stupidest person in Pleasant Valley.â âHe does, eh?â cried Solomon Owl, while Jasper Jay laughed loudly. âAnd you, of course, do not agree with him,â Solomon continued. âI do not!â Mr. Crow declared. âGood!â said Solomon, nodding his head approvingly. âNo, I do not agree with Jasper Jay,â Mr. Crow said. âI claim that thereâs one other person more stupid than you areâand thatâs Fatty Coon.â Well, Solomon Owl certainly was displeased. And it didnât make him feel any happier to hear Jasper Jayâs boisterous shouts, or the hoarse â_haw-haw_â of old Mr. Crow. âI hope you can decide which one of us is right,â Mr. Crow ventured. âI am, of course!â cried Jasper Jay. âYouâre not!â Mr. Crow shouted. And to Solomon Owl he said, âWeâve been disputing like this all day long.â Solomon Owl didnât know what to say. If he announced that Jasper was right it would be the same as admitting that he was the stupidest person in the whole neighborhood. And if he said that old Mr. Crowâs opinion was correct he would not be much better off. Naturally he didnât want to tell either of them that he was right. |
