âWhy, didnât you know? His brother plays left end on the teamââ âKiddy Uptonâs brother on the Harvard Freshmen! No!â âWhose brother?â âMr. Uptonâs, I meant to say.â Louis grinned. âIs he really, Mr. Barclay?â âIâm rather surprised you didnât know it. But I guess Mr. Upton is the kind that doesnât talk much.â âI should think heâd have let that out.â âWell, he let it out to me. I suspectâthough he hasnât told meâthat heâs helping to put his brother through college. And his success in doing that will naturally depend largely on his success or failure here as a master.â âYou meanâkeeping his job?â Barclay nodded. âYes. Oh, I donât suppose thereâs any real doubt about that. Heâs a perfectly competent teacher, isnât he? You know; you have a class with him.â âYe-es,â said Louis, slowly. âThe trouble has been, the fellows horse him a good dealâthough not quite so much as they did.â âTheyâll get over that when they know him better,â remarked Barclay. |
