When Irving introduced Lawrence to them, Westby said,â
âWe hoped we were going to see you here, but we were afraid you might have to eat outside with your team.â âOh, I got special permission from the captain for this occasion,â said Lawrence. âIâm afraid Iâm depriving somebody of his seat,â he added to Irving. âItâs CaldwellâI arranged with him about it. Heâs gone to Mr. Randolphâs table.â âBesides, heâs only a Fourth Former,â said Westby. Lawrence laughed. âYouâre Sixth, I suppose?â Westby nodded. âGoing to Harvard next year?â âYes.â âGood for you. Iâll tell you one thing; you couldnât have a better man to get you in than this brother of mineâif I do say it. He tutored me for Harvardâand I guess youâve never had a worse blockhead, have you, Irv?â âOh, you were all right in some things, Lawrence.â âIâd like to know what. How I used to try your patience, though!â Lawrence chuckled, then turned and addressed the boys, especially Westby and Carroll, as they were the oldest. âDid any of you ever see him mad?â |
