âBut I think the rules donât permit your being out at this time of night, do they?â said Irving. âWell, but as I say, school hasnât really begun yet. And besides, Scabby here is almost as good as a masterâand so is Lou Collingwood; Iâm the only really irresponsible one in the bunchââ âWhere do you go to swim?â âIn the pond, just beyond the isthmusâonly about a quarter of a mile from here. Come on, fellows, Mr. Uptonâs going to let us go.â Irving laughed uneasily. âOh, I didnât say that. If Mr. Randolph is willing that you should go, I wouldnât object.â âYouâre in charge of this dormitory,â argued Westby. âAnd if you gave us permission, Mr. Randolph wouldnât say anything.â âI donât feel that I can make an exception to the rules,â said Irving. âBut school hasnât really begun yet,â persisted Westby. âI think it really has, so far as observing the rules is concerned,â replied Irving. âYou might go with us, sirâand that would make it all right.â âBut I donât believe I want to go in swimming this evening.â |
