âNo; a sheet.â âMineâs one and a half now. What got into him?â âHeâs not without sense,â said Collingwood. âHo!â Westby was derisive. âHeâs soft. He got scared. He knew heâd gone too farâand he was afraid to stand by his guns.â âI donât think so. I think heâs just trying to do the right thing.â It was unfortunate for Irving that later in the afternoon Carter of the Fifth Formâwho played in the banjo club with Westbyâwas passing the Study building just as Westby was coming out from his confinement. âHello, Wes!â said Carter. âThought you were in for three sheets; how do you happen to be at large so soon?â âKiddy made it one and a halfâwithout my asking him,â said Westby. âAnd Collingwood the same?â âHe made his only a sheet.â âThatâs it,â said Carter shrewdly. âI was waiting to see the rector this morning; the door was open, and he had Kiddy in there with him. I guess he was lecturing him on those reports; I guess he told him heâd have to take off a couple of sheets.â |
