youâd make a foul. Keep your elbows in, and run straight.â
Irving followed Barclay round and tried to grasp the significance of his comments. Dennison came by at a trot. âLonger stride, Dennison! Your runningâs choppy! Lengthen out, lengthen out! Thatâs better.âI have it!â Barclay turned suddenly to Irving. âWhat?â âThe thing for you to do. Weâll make you an official at the track games next week. That will give you a standing at onceâshow everybody that you are really a keen follower of sportâor want to be.â âBut what can I do? I suppose an official has to do something.â âYou can be starter. That will put you right in touch with the fellows that are entered.â âWould I have a revolver? Iâve never fired a gun off in my life.â âThen itâs time you did. Of course youâll have a revolver. And youâll be the noisiest, most important man on the field. Thatâs what you need to make yourself; wake the fellows up to what you really are!âNow I must be off to my football men; youâd better hang round here and pick up what you can about running. And rememberâyouâre to act as starter.â âIf youâll see me through.â |
