âNo.â âCaptain Benson?â âBenson is my name.â âThis letter is addressed to Mr. Farnum,â went on the stranger, âbut Mr. Pollard told me I could hand it to you.â Captain Jack took the letter from the unsealed envelope. âMy dear Farnum,â ran the enclosure, âsince youâre short a good machinist for the engine room of the âFarnum,â the bearer, Samuel Truax, seems to me to be just the man you want. Iâve examined him, and he understands the sort of machinery we use. Better give him a chance.â The note was signed in David Pollardâs well-known, scrawly handwriting. âIâm sorry you canât see Mr. Farnum to-night,â said Benson, pleasantly. âHeâll be here early in the morning, though.â âWhen do you sail?â asked Truax, quickly. âThat you would have to ask Mr. Farnum, too,â smiled Jack. âBut, see here, Mr. Pollard engaged me to work aboard one of your submarines.â âIt looks that way, doesnât it?â laughed the young skipper. |
