âThe United States will take its boat one of these days, Captain,â Mr.
Farnum continued, after lighting a cigar. âBy the way, did Dave tell you the name we are thinking of for the third boat, now on the stocks?â âDaveâ was Mr. Pollard, the inventor of the Pollard Submarine boat. âNo, sir,â Captain Jack replied. âWe have thought,â resumed Mr. Farnum, quietly, after blowing out a ring of smoke, âof calling the third boat, now building, the âBenson.ââ âTheâtheâwhat, sir?â stammered Jack, flushing and rising. âNow, donât get excited, lad,â laughed the shipbuilder. âButâbutânaming a boat for the United States Navy after me, sirââ Captain Jackâs face flushed crimson. âOf course, if you objectââ smiled Mr. Farnum, then paused. âObject? You know I donât, sir. But I am afraid the idea is going to my head,â laughed Jack, his face still flushed. âThe very idea of there being in the United States Navy a fine and capable craft named after meââ âOh, if the Navy folks object,â laughed Farnum, âthen theyâll change the name quickly enough. You understand, lad, the names we give to our boats last only until the craft are sold. The Navy people can change those names if they please.â |
