Jack thanked the naval commander, then hastened back to the âFarnumâ to
communicate the news. âMe for the shore trip,â declared Eph, promptly. All the others agreed with him. âIâll come back by ten oâclock to-night, though,â volunteered Sam Truax. âOne of the crew ought to be aboard.â âWeâll stay ashore,â decided Jack, âand return in the morning.â âIâm coming back to-night,â retorted Truax. âKeep still, and follow orders,â muttered Eph, digging his elbow into Truaxâs ribs. âThe captain gives the orders here.â Jack, however, had turned away. Within five minutes a boat put off from shore, bringing two soldiers of the marine guard alongside. With them, in the shore boat, was a corporal of the guard. âAny of your crew coming back to-night, sir?â asked the corporal. âNone,â Benson answered. âWill you instruct the sentries to see that none of the crew are allowed aboard during the night?â âVery good, sir.â The shore boat waited to convey them to the landing.
