âThat depends,â Skipper Jack replied, âupon a manâs ability in such a subject.â âIs it long enough time, sir, for a boy?â That was rather a hard dig. Instantly the other cadets became all attention. âIt depends upon the boy, as it would upon the man,â Jack answered. âDo you consider, Mr. Benson, that you know all about submarine boats, sir?â âOh, no.â âWho does, sir?â âNo one that I ever heard of,â Jack answered. âFew men interested in submarine boats know much beyond the peculiarities of their own boats.â âAnd that applies equally to boys, sir?â âYes,â Jack smiled. âDo you consider yourself, sir, fully competent to handle this craft?â âIâd rather someone else would say it,â Jack replied. âMy employers, though, seem to consider me competent.â |
