"But what is it? Where is Eve?"

"I don't know. She didn't come home till very late last night, and I
don't know where she was. You remember what you asked me to
promise?"

"To let me know if you were anxious about her."

"Yes, and I am. She's in danger I only hope----"

"What?"

"I don't like to tell you all I know. It doesn't seem right. But I'm
so afraid for Eve."

"I can only imagine one kind of danger----"

"Yes--of course, it's that--you know what I mean. But there's
more than you could fancy."

"Tell me, then, what has alarmed you?"

"When did you see her last?" Patty inquired.

"More than a week ago. Two or three days before I came here."

"Had you noticed anything?"

"Nothing unusual."
