His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe--and majesty, Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings; But mercy--is above this sceptered sway, It is enthroned--in the hearts of kings, It is an attribute--to God himself: And earthly power--doth then show likest God's, When mercy--seasons justice. LOVE. In peace, Love tunes the shepherd's reed; In war, he mounts the warrior's steed; In halls, in gay attire is seen; In hamlets, dances on the green. Love rules the court, the camp, the grove, And men below, and saints above; For love is heaven, and heaven is love. AWE, EXTENDING TO FEAR. It thunders! Sons of dust, in reverence bow! Ancient of Days! thou speakest from above! Thy right hand wields the bolt of terror now-- That hand which scatters peace and joy and love. Almighty! trembling, like a timid child, I hear Thy awful voice!--alarmed, afraid, I see the flashes of Thy lightning wild, And in the very grave would hide my head! |
