After the destruction of the Temple, this word was used to designate the service of prayer. It is used in one of the benedictions after the reading of the _Haftarah_: _al ha-torah we-al ha-abodah_, "for the law and for the divine service," see _Prayer-book_, ed. Singer, p. 149.
