_A beautiful forenoon in May._
_The same room as in the first act. The bed, in which MRS. HENSCHEL lay, is no longer there. The window which it covered is wide open. HANNE, her face toward the window, her sleeves turned up above her elbows, is busy at the washtub._ _FRANZ, his shirt-sleeves and trousers also rolled up, his bare feet in wooden pattens, comes in carrying a pail. He has been washing waggons._ FRANZ [_With awkward merriment._] Hanne, I'm comin' to see you! Lord A'mighty! Has you got such a thing as some warm water? HANNE [_Angrily throwing the piece of linen which she has on the washboard back into the tub and going over to the oven._] You come in here a sight too often! FRANZ Is that so? What's wrong, eh? HANNE [_Pouring hot water into the pail._] Don't stop to ask questions. I got no time. |
